As many of you know, my friend and cousin, Captain Philip J Dykeman, USMC, was killed in action on June 26, 2008, while serving our country in Iraq. Phil died at the young age of 38 leaving behind his wife of 10 years, 3 children – Austin, 10; Emilee, 8; Ashley, 8 – and an extended family stretching across the country that miss him dearly with every passing day. Myrtle Beach half-Marathon…. tomorrow!
February 13, 2009The Myrtle Beach 1/2 Marathon is tomorrow February 14th 2009. If your in the area please come and support our run. We need all of the support we can get; 13.1 miles is a long way. We run for Team Dykeman proudly. Tomorrow we have 9 runners participating.
I want to THANK everyone for their support for the Scholarship. We have had a good start, but we are not finished. To date we have raised $ 5,800 and our efforts, with all of your help, continue. In the Fall, we will be awarding our first scholarship in Captain Phil’s name.
We are excited to carry the name of Captain Philip Dykeman USMC who was killed in action (Iraq) on June 26, 2008. Only 8 months ago. He is survived by his wife and three children. ( age 10 and twins age 6) — MY children are the same age.
A special Thank You to Rusty Sneeden. He has taken it upon himself to be active in supporting Team Dykeman. Not only is he running in the Race Saturday morning, but he is spreading the word about the scholarship. Rusty, you truly are a good friend and a Great Person.
We are not Marines, but we run for one!
Always Faithful

I did It!
November 5, 2008We did it, is more like it. I finished the Marathon in 5 hours 1 minand 22seconds. Not bad. It was because of all of the support that I received that I was able to run the “City of Oaks” Marathon. There was never a point that I wasn’t going to finish. I would never disrespect a Fallen Marine. I ran for my Cousin Phil, I know that he was with me. I wished he was there to carry me. But it is our job to help carry on his memory.
Thank you for all that have contributed and to all that will continue to. This is not over. Later this week I will get an update on how much we have raised for the Captain Philip J. Dykeman Memorial Scholarship Fund. I know that we have not reached out goal, YET! The website www.teamdykeman.com ,by Friday, will have a total. We will also have a video and pictures of the Marathon.
As I ran through the finish line the announcer said” # 139 is Andrew Bateman member of Team Dykeman. He is running for Captain Philip J Dykeman, United States Marine Corps. He was killed in Iraq in June.” I didn’t catch the rest, I was pointing to the sky. Paying my own tribute. ” WE DID IT” Read the rest of this entry »
Andrew did it! by Kathryn Shoults
November 4, 2008Hello to everyone
Andrew did it! 26.2 miles and smiling at the finish line ( and he didn’t even know there was a massage at the end) Amazing doesn’t even begin to come close to the man or the event-I know I look forward to whatever is next and the time spent together helping. The sacrifices, effort and time(money ,too) to create a lasting legacy for someone that I love, we all love, and miss so very much…well somehow it’s starting to come together for me and I see a glimpse of the “good that comes from everything”. Thank you Andrew. I love you. And Phil–I love you too.
Love Kathryn

Tribute to Central New York
October 26, 2008I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, I will probably live here the rest of my life. But when anyone asks where I am from, I reply proudly that I am from Central New York. My Father Graduated from Syracuse in 1949. Canʼt wait for Basketball season. We travel home every year to our family’s camp on Chase Lake in the Adirondacks. I have family all over Central New York. People from this area are some of the best people in the world. I have always known it, but the respect shown by the patriotic people of this area the day of Captain Philʼs funeral, was awesome.
Below please read the letter of thanks sent by Master Chief Petty Officer Arthur Dykeman, US Navy, Captain Philʼs older brother, to the Post Standard. We chose the Paul V. Moore High School scholarship fund as a tribute to Captain Phil and the people of Central New York. It is our hope that not only will Phil’s children benefit from this scholarship but also others from this great area. Read the rest of this entry »
The ball is rolling….
October 22, 2008Mrs. Cynthia Crouch has been instrumental in helping us set up the scholarship. Many Thanks to her. She also is spreading the word. this went out to the staff of Paul V. Moore High School. Mrs. Crouch is a Guidance Counselor at the school, and was for all three Dykeman children. She has really been great to work with.
“Andrew
I put out your email to all of the our staff and have heard back from a couple of staff members that they needed kleenex after reading. You really worded this so well, Andrew. Having said that, one of the staff asked if you had placed this in the Citizen Outlet and/or the Syracuse Post Standard (Oswego edition) newspaper and thought I might give you a heads up on that as there could be people who knew Philip (in class or school or community) that might want to contribute. Hope this helps. Cindy”
So let’s get the ball rolling… I know these are tough times… but we need every bodies help to kick-start the scholarship fund. For information on making a donation click here… https://teamdykeman.wordpress.com/about/
Always faithful,
Andrew
Welcome to TeamDykeman.com
October 21, 2008This blog is a work in progress. The goal is to keep everyone updated on our efforts to raise money for the Captian Phillip J. Dykeman Memorial Scholarship. The blog format was chosen because it allows everyone to participate in the conversation. Below each post is a link to add your comments, comments on other comments… and so on. You get the idea.
In a week I will be participating in the City of Oaks Marathon. I will be posting a few stories from my training and will use the blog to let everybody know how I did… you know… finished. If you want to post a picture or add a post to the blog. E-mail us at teamdykeman@yahoo.com and we will add it to the blog. I want this to be a fun but informative.
