As I wrote the headline, I paused for a moment on the word serve. Should it be serve or should it be served? I quickly decided that serve was the right, as service to our country never ends. To all those who have died, to all those who have retired, to all those currently in the armed forces — all continue to serve! We at Team Dykeman thank you for your service and all the freedoms your service provides us.
I was passed a link that I thought very appropriate to a include on Veteran’s Day.
What a weekend! This past Sunday Team Dykeman entered 17 runners into the 2009 Marine Corp Marathon. All running to honor the memory of Capt. Phil. I am most please to announce that all 17 runners completed the 26.2 miles. Way to go team! Read the rest of this entry »
On June 26, 2008, the life of Phil Dykeman came to a sudden end. A father, a Marine, a cousin, a friend. There are many around the world today who will pause to remember. Phil touched the hearts and minds of everyone he met. Phil was my cousin. I believe there is about 11 years separating us so we weren’t really close growing up. But in 1998 when he attended Marine Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, I got to know Phil, the man, a little better. Read the rest of this entry »

The Myrtle Beach 1/2 Marathon is tomorrow February 14th 2009. If your in the area please come and support our run. We need all of the support we can get; 13.1 miles is a long way. We run for Team Dykeman proudly. Tomorrow we have 9 runners participating.
I want to THANK everyone for their support for the Scholarship. We have had a good start, but we are not finished. To date we have raised $ 5,800 and our efforts, with all of your help, continue. In the Fall, we will be awarding our first scholarship in Captain Phil’s name.
We are excited to carry the name of Captain Philip Dykeman USMC who was killed in action (Iraq) on June 26, 2008. Only 8 months ago. He is survived by his wife and three children. ( age 10 and twins age 6) — MY children are the same age.
A special Thank You to Rusty Sneeden. He has taken it upon himself to be active in supporting Team Dykeman. Not only is he running in the Race Saturday morning, but he is spreading the word about the scholarship. Rusty, you truly are a good friend and a Great Person.
We are not Marines, but we run for one!
Always Faithful

It was brought to my attention that I need to be careful with my use of ERMAs Easily Recognizable Military Acronyms So I will try and spell them out first.
MTF = More To Follow
Phil was going to school in Brockport studying Criminal Justice. I had been in the Navy for a little over 5 years, a First Class Petty Officer, and was stationed at the Naval Ship Yards In Brooklyn NY NY (we were moving the base functions to Staten Island). I had been there for about 6 to 8 Months I guess and the 1st gulf war was happening.
I was working in the Cabinet/Carpenter Shop one day when my Chief came in and told me I had a phone call in his office from a Marine Master Sergeant. My Chief then started to ask me why was a MSgt was calling me, What did I do, Was he going to see a report from base security, why didn’t I tell him I had done something to the local Marines, Who else was involved.. Well you get the idea. Read the rest of this entry »
I am Judy Dykeman, Art’s wife and this is my observation.
We should all be so blessed to have the emotional strength that Art has. This remarkable man has had so much loss in his short life. A lesser person would have crumbled. Not Art. His philosophy in this life is “move ahead smartly”. As abnormal as I think this is, (maybe cuz I’m a woman) it somehow works for him. I envy his ability to do that.
Art is one of those guys that sees the glass as half full. He’s truly grateful for what he has and doesn’t dwell on what is gone. Instead of being over-come with grief & sorrow as I expected he would be, he’s not. He’s just simply proud of the man that Phil was. He gets strength from that. I asked him a lot early on “are you bitter or angry”? He had several standard answers. My favorite one is “this is not my first rodeo” as he says with a half-smile and tear just about to roll down his chubby cheek.
As the days go by I can’t say it’s gotten any easier to except Phil’s passing. But from this unfortunate event, Phil has unknowingly created a stronger bond. A bond appropriately named “Teamdykeman”. Funny how life works.
So what I’ve observed in these last months is that Art is right. (I hate it when that happens) It is to our advantage to “move ahead smartly”.
I’m proud to be the wife of Art Dykeman and even more honored to be a part of his amazing family.
